Students were given a book to read. The teacher followed along while the student read the book. Afterwards the teacher would ask students questions. Some example questions: What lesson does the character learn in this story? Use a detail from the story to explain your answer. Tell what happens in this story. Be sure to tell about the beginning, the middle, and the end. How do the characters feel in the story? How do you know? Look at a particular section in the book. Tell the most important ideas in these pages. How does the picture on page______ help you learn more about ___________________
Student Three falls just above grade level for reading comprehension. He was able to discuss the emotions of characters and he was also able to use the text to provide support for his answers. Again, his verbal communication is not as strong as his written communication. To increase comprehension and the ability to discuss aspects of the text orally, I would ask him guiding questions when reading together. I would also provide sentence starters for him when he is doing paired reading so that him and his partner could work on elaborating their thoughts.
