Students were asked to read a passage and afterwards were asked some questions. Some example questions were: What was the student getting ready for? What did she have to bring a form home for? Was she excited about picture day?
The teacher marked off if the student answered using one of the acceptable answers listed on the prompt.
Student Three is above grade level for being able to retell a story. He was able to tell what he read about with detail. I think the reason he didn't score higher is because he is very shy so his oral communication may not show how much he understood a text. Because of this, I would have him write summaries of the books he has read. He really likes writing, especially during free write time. Allowing him to write summaries and illustrate them during this period would help him expand his thoughts and be able to show how well he can retell the events in a story.
